Zane Venture was a skaa Mistborn on the planet of Scadrial, and first appeared in The Well of Ascension. He was the illegitimate son of Straff Venture and the half-brother to Elend Venture. Because he was of skaa decent, he was kept a secret from the rest of the world and, consequently, had a difficult childhood. Such a harsh upbringing resulted in Zane having an unstable personality, and engaging in dysregulated behavior, such as cutting himself.

History
Zane first appears as The Watcher to Vin, a dark figure that follows her around the city. Later Zane’s character is revealed as he comes to the city with a message from Straff. It becomes known that Zane is Straff’s mistborn in his army against Luthadel as well as Straff’s son.
Zane regularly "poisoned" his father, providing the assassination attempts Straff expected. After each of these Straff called for his former mistress Amaranta, who was a skilled herbalist.mb2 Zane, however, was the lover of Amaranta and had convinced her to only make him think the constant poisonings were taking place.mb2 She was actually giving him doses of an addictive substance that produced withdrawal effects that he assumed was poisoning.

He attempted to persuade Vin to run away with him and reacted violently, stabbing her, when she rejected him.

Throughout the story, Zane attempts to convince Vin that she does not belong in Elend’s world, and instead should run away with him. As an attempt to further convince her, he sends several of Straff’s allomancers in an attack against Vin and Elend during an assembly meeting meant to determine the future kingship in Luthadel. Zane later approaches Vin regarding the attack and tells her Cett had sent the assassins and that she should seek revenge with the help of himself. The two descend upon Keep Hasting where a group of Cett’s army was staying. The two combined kill 300 of Cett’s 1000 men at the manor. Filled with presumed adrenaline and Ruin’s intrusive voice, Zane is prepared to kill Cett after Vin’s hesitation, but she is able to persuade him to do otherwise.
Although he was burning Atium at the time, Vin managed to kill him by looking for his reaction to her atium shadow and reacting accordingly.mb2

Zane visits Vin one last time and tries to persuade Vin to leave with him, promising they can go wherever she wants. Vin seems convinced and begins to leave until, at the last minute, realizes leaving is the wrong move. She attempts to voice her concern to Zane, but he becomes filled with rage and attacks her. They fight, with Zane having the advantage of atium. He repeats several times that Vin was supposed to save him, presumably from his insanity and Ruin’s voice. In the end, Vin uses Zane’s reaction to her atium shadow to stab him in the neck and kill him.mb2 As he is dying, Ruin reveals to Zane that he was never insane.

After Zane’s repeated “poisonings”, Straff decides it is time to kill Zane. Assassins attempt to kill Zane as he sleeps, but because of his keen instincts, he wakes and stops them. After this, Zane informs Straff that he is leaving and taking Vin with him.

His Hemalurgic spike granted him increased power and great precision with Allomantic steel.5668 Zane spiked himself.6074
