The True Desolation is mentioned throughout the The Way of Kings, the first book of the Stormlight Archive. It appears that the True Desolation will be somehow different from the previous hundred Desolations that were said to have occurred.

Both Kaladin and Dalinar Kholin have visions where they are warned that the True Desolation comes.

The Oathpact has been broken by the Heralds. Talenel'Elin was left upholding it alone. In the last chapter of the The Way of Kings, someone claiming to be Talenel appears, says he failed, and falls to the ground, apparently dead. If Talenel truly failed, then the Oathpact has been broken, which may leave the possibility for a "True Desolation" to occur.
