Brandon always planned for the Alcatraz series to consist of five books, however Scholastic, the original publisher, only bought the first four. For a variety of reasons, including Scholastic being unwilling to make a contract for the fifth book, Brandon bought back the rights in early 2013.{{bws ref|state-of-the-sanderson|State of the Sanderson|date=Jul 24th, 2013-07-24}} He later re-sold the series, including book 5, to Tor.{{cite}}
