Sazed and Tindwyl debate about the metal plate at the Conventical of Seran and Alendi's logbook. They are confused why Kwaan opposed Alendi taking the power from the Well of Ascension to defeat the dangerous Deepness. Sazed reads the rubbings and Tindwyl says something is wrong but she isn't sure what. They discuss this and ponder why Kwaan sent Rashek to kill or hinder Alendi, since it doesn't make sense based on what they know. They realize that when Luthadel is conquered, many people will be killed, and that further study is needed to determine what Alendi's motives were.
Elend deliberates on his failures to protect Luthadel. He visits Elend and Tindwyl to get advice. They debate about why Elend lost his throne. Sazed and Tindwyl both state that Elend did well to stick to his convictions, and Elend leaves.
