She iswas a member of the [[Devotary]] of Purity and a [[Surgebinder]] with the ability to [[Soulcast]] by communicating with [[Truthspren]]. She was also in possession of a [[Shardblade]]{{ref|b|WoK|c|7}}{{ref|b|WoK|c|45}} and a broken [[Soulcaster]] that belonged to her father. Shallan revealed to the Truthspren that she killed her father.

Shallan iswas considered shy by her family, but when she left the family estates behind, she opened up and gained confidence. She hashad a quick wit, and often unthinkingly uttersuttered the first thing to come to mind.

Shallan hashad the ability to deliberately memorize a scene (usually involving blinking) after which she cancould paint or draw that scene with remarkable accuracy. She hashad a passion for learning and a great talent for drawing. She iswas never without her sketchbooks and charcoal, so she canmight draw whatever catchescaught her interest. Shallan frequently drawsdrew and makesmade notes on the world around her, in order to promote her [[Calling]] of natural history.

Shallan spendsspent several months chasing [[Jasnah]] across many cities, hoping to become her ward in order to steal Jasnah's soulcaster. She finally catchescaught up to Jasnah in [[Kharbranth]], and attemptsattempted to convince her to take Shallan as her ward, failing twice and finally succeeding on the third attempt. Shallan succeedsfinally succeeded in stealing Jasnah's Soulcaster only to discover that it's was a fake. Shallan also discoversdiscovered her own Soulcasting abilities after this theft.

During her studies with Jasnah, Shallan developsdeveloped a friendship with the ardent [[Kabsal]], who accidentally poisonspoisoned both Shallan and himself in an attempt to assassinate Jasnah for the [[Ghostbloods]]. Shallan realizesrealized that her father had also been a member of the same organization.
