The blade is six feet long, slightly curved and a handspan wide, making it broader than most of its kind.{{book ref|sa3|28}} It has wavelike serrations near the hiltcrossguard, and curves like a fisherman's hook near the tip.{{book ref|sa1|13}}{{book ref|sa2|5}} The hilt is long enough to allow the wielder to use both hands, even while wearing gauntlets.{{book ref|sa1|65}} While in the possession of Dalinar, Oathbringer has a [[Polestone#Heliodor|heliodor]] set into its pommel,{{wob ref|4976}} possibly after a previous gemstone was cracked in battle.{{book ref|sa3|75}} This is notable as beingheliodor is the polestone of the Radiant Order of Bondsmiths, of which Dalinar is the first since the Recreance.

Oathbringer was the Shardblade of the infamous [[Alethkar|Alethi]] warriorking [[Sadees]] the Sunmaker.{{book ref|sa3|11}} After his death, it was passed down through various owners until eventually ending in the hands of the elder [[Tanalan's father|Highprince Tanalan]].{{book ref|sa3|11}} After Dalinar, aged twenty at the time, defeatsdefeated Tanalan at the [[Rift]]; the younger [[Tanalan]], hewho takeswas only seven years old at the time, briefly attempted to defend his father with Oathbringer before Dalinar took for himself and bondsbonded it.{{book ref|sa1|13}}{{book ref|sa3|11}}

Dalinar wieldswielded Oathbringer for many decades and in a number of battles, including the unification of Alethkar, the second conflict at the Rift, and the [[War of Reckoning]].{{book ref|sa3|75}}{{book ref|sa1|13}} Following the [[Battle of the Tower]], he givestraded it to [[Torol Sadeas]], trading it for all of Sadeas' bridgemen as a way of thanking [[Kaladin]] and the rest of [[Bridge Four]] for saving the life of him and his men.{{book ref|sa1|69}}{{book ref|sa1|68}}

Sadeas holdsheld Oathbringer for a little over two months, until shortly after the [[Battle of Narak]]. When [[Adolin Kholin]] killskilled him for threatening his family one time too many, he dropsdropped it, and Adolin tossestossed it to a balcony below while trying to hide the murder.{{book ref|sa3|89}} It's was later discovered by Bridge Four on a patrol and given to Dalinar, who keepskept it for a short while without bonding it before giving it to [[Ialai]], Sadeas' widow. She bestowsbestowed the blade on [[Amaram]], who bondsbonded it despite already owning a different Shardblade.{{book ref|sa3|28}}

Oathbringer iswas carried by Amaram until the battle[[Battle of [[Thaylen CityField]], where he iswielded two blades simultaneously before being shot to death with a [[Grandbow]] by [[Lunamor]]. As the latter refusesrefused to take up Amaram's Shards, the blade iswas once again reclaimed by Dalinar, who chooses it as the namesake for his book, but doesdid not bond it again as per the [[Stormfather]]'s wishes.{{book ref|sa3|22}}
