They served as a windbreak for the whole nation, weakening the [[highstorm]]s enough to protect the country and its inhabitants from the destructive power of the storms.{{book ref|b|twok|i|4}} Due to this effect, the flora and fauna of Shinovar were not defined by surviving the highstorms, so they were vastly different from the rest of Roshar.
