He wasis a highmarshal in service of Highprince [[Sadeas]],{{ref|b|sa1|c|10}} and hadhas to watch over northern Alethkar while his highprince foughtfights in the [[Vengeance Pact]] on the [[Shattered Plains]]. Because of the continuous skirmishes at Alethkar's borders he wasis in permanent need of new soldiers. Eventually he camecomes through [[Hearthstone]] for recruitment. Hearthstone's citylord [[Roshone]] -- apparently Amaram's distant cousin -- committed commits[[Tien]] to be a recruit, whatwhich resultedresults in [[Kaladin]]'s volunteering duefor toservice hisin wishorder to protect Tien; though Amaram promisedpromises [[Lirin]] to stint Tien's duty to be a messenger boy.{{ref|b|twok|c|44}} Amaram didndoesn't keep his promise, and Tien dieddies in his very first battle,{{ref|b|twok|c|67}} leaving Kaladin in a bitter grief.

Years later, shortly before the four years tour of Kaladin's duty ended, an unidentified [[Veden]] Shardbearer attackedattacks Amaram during one of these border skirmishes. Kaladin foughtfights and kills this Shardbearer, but gaverefuses to claim his Shards and gives the the Shardplate and Shardblade to his men.{{ref|b|twok|c|48}} Amaram, greedyhowever, killedkills the survivors of Kaladin's squad before his eyes and tooktake the Shardplate and Shardblade for himself. He toldtells Kaladin that, as a mercy, he wouldwill not kill him but brand him as slave and sell him, claiming Kaladin was a deserter.{{ref|b|twok|c|51}}
