Jam is two years older than [[Kaladin]]. His father served as a soldier in [[Amaram|Brightlord Amaram]]'s army where he got injured and was left with a lame leg, which [[Lirin]] operated on.{{book ref|sa1|10}} Kaladin and [[Tien]] watched Jam while he was trained in the quarterstaff by his father.

 

Jam is also a fruity spread for which Shallan has a deep affection.
