Around the year 1150, Gavilar sent Dalinar to the borders of Alethkar in order to fight Herdazians and Vedens as a gesture of Kholin strength, and to defend the security of the border. This was further needed due to the increased aggression of Herdaz under their new monarch.{{book ref\|sa3\|49}} This helped him to become one of Gavilar's best generals, and also shaping the modern Alethkar-Herdaz border.
