The First Contract came into existence after it was discovered that powerful soothers could take over the body of Kandra and force them to do their will. <ref> {{bref|mb3|C|5}} </ref>
Originally just a series of promises made by the First Generation to the Lord Ruler, the First Contract eventually came to describe all rights and duties of the Kandra. They were cast onto metal plates in order to avoid being read or altered by [[Ruin]].<ref name=Epigraph11>{{bref|mb3|e|11}}</ref>
