The worldsetting of the ''[[ReckonersThe (series)|Reckoners]]'' series]] is a twenty-first century alternate [[Wikipedia: Earth|Earth]]. Visible in the sky is a large red object called [[Calamity (satellite)|Calamity]] (believed to be a satellite), which appeared twelve years before the events of Steelheart. One year after the emergence of Calamity, the [[Epic]]s, super-powered humans, appeared.
 
At the start of Steelheart, the High Epics, with their prime invincibility and incredible superpowers, are the de-facto rulers of humanity.
