The setting of ''[[The Reckoners]]'' series is a twenty-first century alternate [[Wikipedia: Earth|Earth]]. Visible in the sky is a large red object called [[Calamity (Epic)|Calamity]] (a high-powered Gifting Epic), which appeared twelve years before the events of Steelheart. One year after the emergence of Calamity, the [[Epic]]s, super-powered humans, appeared.

 

At the start of ''[[Steelheart]]'', the High Epics, with their prime invincibility and incredible superpowers, are the de-facto rulers of humanity.{{book ref|Steelheart|1}}
