As a youth his father [[Dalinar]] took him to a place where riders can meet [[Ryshadium]]. There he bonded with the steed [[Sureblood]]. Adolin was more nervous on this day than he was when he won his Shardblade.{{book ref|sa2|81}}.
====Training====
Adolin most likely beganstarted training under a weapons master inwith the sword at least by the age of tensix{{book ref|sa2|26}}. He eventually started training with [[Zahel]] after stubbornly refusing to at first{{book ref|sa2|18}} some number of years before the present{{book ref|sa2|35}}. There are indications he was trained by his father in using Shardplate.{{book ref|sa2|18}} When Adolin was young Dalinar also made him serve in a spearman squad for two months with the intention of teaching him what it was like to "serve in the shoes of his men."{{book ref|sa2|41}}
Adolin mentions that he became a soldier by circumstance rather than choice.{{book ref|sa2|14}}
