After his father is killed by Steelheart on the Day of Annexation, David swore revenge. He lost himself studying epics, searching their weaknesses and powers. He grew up one of the many orphans in Newcago working at a weapons factory where he learned to shoot a rifle. He managed to predict that the Reckoners would strike a certain epic. He caught up to his heroes and managed to persuade them to join his cause of freeing Newcago.
