[[Shallan]] tells [[Jasnah]] whatthat she thinks aboutshe Jasnah'swas actionstechnically andright intentionsto onkill the nightfootpads, two weeks ago whenbut she killedacted theimmorally fourand robbersunethically. TheyJasnah proceedis tosatisfied talkthat aboutShallan thehas decisionlearned Shallana hasgood reached,deal thoughfrom Shallanthe worrieslesson whyand Jasnahdismisses hasn'ther reacted tofor the theftrest of herthe [[Soulcaster]]day. AfterIt's thisbeen Jasnahtwo givesweeks Shallansince the restSoulcaster ofwas thestolen, dayand off,Shallan tois dopuzzled withthat asJasnah shehasn't seemed pleasesto react at all. Back in her chambers, she thinks about her failed attempts to use the Soulcaster and after having found a reference thatwhile humming might help she tries it for half an hour. DuringShe this time she considerswonders if Jashnah might have duped her with a fake. WhileShe takingtakes a pausebreak fromand tryingstarts tosketching, make the Soulcaster work,and she suddenly hears a voice asking “What are you?” inA themaid room.cracks When she finds a palace maid inopen the maindoor, roomand she considers if she heard her voice, butShallan convinces herself that she must have heardinterpreted somethe noiserandom thesounds womanof hadcleaning madenearby whileas cleaningwords. She notices thatscolds the womanmaid wasfor ingoing into Jasnah's room, andthen after tellingsends her off to go seetell Jasnah, sinceso she hascan forbiddenenter anyoneherself. in her rooms, ShallanShe hurries in in the hopeshoping to find notes on soulcasting. ButShe ofinstead thefinds threea notebooks she finds onenotebook focused on [[Natanatan]], the [[Unclaimed Hills]], and the [[Shattered Plains]]. theThe nexttwo isothers titledcontain “Notesnotes on [[Urithiru]]” and after reading part of the final one she finds that it deals with the [[Voidbringers]]. Shallan wonders why a nonbeliever like Jasnah would concern herself with what she herself considers fables. A knock on the door getsreveals her fast out of Jasnahs room before realizing that Jasnah wouldn't knock. Instead she finds [[Kabsal]], who having heard that she has free time, brought some bread and jam for a picnic.
 
Kabsal explains the stories behind the [[Truthberry|Truthberry jam]]. TheShallan topiclaments movesthat onshe toisn't Shallanmuch fitness asof a scholar, since she prefers the outdoors. After that Kabsal starts complimentingflirting, and flirting with her.although Shallan tries to thinkthinks that thisit couldnwouldn't work butout continuesfor to encourage him. He soon comes to a point wherethem, she tellsencourages him to stop teasing and he replies that he is not. He implies that he might leave the ardentia for her. TryingShallan tosteers get out of thisthe conversation Shallanto tellsJasnah. himHe of Jasnah's suspicionsreveals that hehis onlyinitial getsplan closewas to herget because he intendsShallan to askhelp her tohim steal the Soulcaster. He surprises her when he tells her that initially he did intend to ask hersoulcaster, but that his superiors told him not todisapproved. They were afraid that [[Elhokar]] might star a war with [[Kharbranth]] if they did steal the Soulcaster. WhileShallan tellingprobes herfor thissome hehints also tells heron how importantto Soulcastersuse really are since they replace hundreds of wagons for all the suppliesit. MovingHe the topic Shallan tries to get Kabsal to reveal how Soulcasters are used but finds that he thinkssays you only have to tap a gem and touch the object you wish to change, thusbut beingJasnah ofdoesn't no help to her. She notesdo that she killed the moment between them, and he tells her that he is glad she did. He muses about how bad he is at being an ardent. Begging time to think, Kabsal says goodbye, but when rising sees King [[Taravangian]]leaves and another ardent walking by. Kabsal, who is supposed to be on cataloging duty, confesses that some ardents think he shows too much interest in Shallan. Makingreturns plans for the next dayinside, he leaves, remarking again how he might leave the ardentia for her. Shallan, even more confused, and worrying about Jasnah and her family, thinks she should use the experience in the ally as an excuse to leave, but she finds that she ''loves'' learning and studying. Back in Jasnah’s suite she readsfinding a letternote formfrom Captain [[Tozbek]] informing her that he will arrive in one weeks timeweek. FindingShe shewants onlyto hasstudy thisas onemuch weekas leftpossible before leaving, so she decides to gogoes back to the alcove to do more studying. Jasnah, surprised by her appearance, is very pleased with her decision to studyread.
