Panicked, she hurries from the room and runs into a servant who informs her that one of her [[spanreed]]sspanreeds is flashing and hands it over to her. Going into the main room, she is glad to find her brother [[Balat Davar|Balat]] talking to her. She tells him that she has managed to steal the Soulcaster, but hasn't left yet so as not to draw suspicion on toonto herself. She explains why she hasn't left and why she has to wait. Shortly before the end of the conversation Balat informs her that the “friends” of their fathersfather visited again. Shallan frets even more about the theft and when a chambermaid comes to their quarters, she starts worrying about the SoulcastersSoulcaster's safety. andShe decides to put it into her savesafe-pouch and leaves the room with a basket full of bread and [[Bluebar|Bluebar jam]] left by Kabsal.

Two hours later sitting in the palace gardens, Shallan has calmed down and is drawing some snails and plants. She notes the symbiotic relationship between a snailssnail she is drawing and the [[shalebark]] it is on, writing it down next to her drawing. After making sure she is alone, she getgets the Soulcaster out into ordertry to figurepuzzle out how to use it assince [[Luesh]] can no longer show them how. However sheShe has no luck and tries to think of other ways to get it to work or save her family.
