Mechanics
The knife appears to be a method to permanently kill a Herald, rather than simply returning them to Braize as a "conventional" death would. ShalashJezrien, whowhile wasinitially ablein toa feeldrunken herstupor, father'squickly death, realizes instantlythat distinguishessomething itabout fromthis previousdeath deaths.is Ifdifferent heand wasclaims killedto conventionallyfeel shethe wouldknife stilldrawing havesomething beenfrom ablehim tointo senseitself. herLikewise father'sShalash soul, instantly butdistinguishes init thisfrom circumstanceprevious deaths as she could notno longer sense his soul.sa3 This process operates under similar principles to the Scadrian manifestation of Investiture known as Hemalurgy, where practitioners are able to steal part of an individual's spiritweb using metal spikes. It is a matter of debate among cosmere philosophers whether this is in fact Hemalurgy or rather a related, but distinct, phenomenon.

Following Jezrien's death, the sapphire set into the knife takes on a "subdued glow". The knife, when removed, trails a black smoke and leaves behind a blackened wound.sa3

The sapphire in the knife's hilt is specifically for Jezrien. Whether the use of that specific polestone is mechanically relevant or only symbolic is unknown.

Theories
It has been theorized that the knife is made of Odium's god metal, citing its golden/yellow-ish white color and the fact that Odium often manifests as a figure in gold and white and his power is often perceived as a golden light.

The knife may share some relation to Nightblood, which is also known to cause blackened wounds and leaks a black smoke.

“Was, was, was . . .” The man started to tremble violently, his eyes opening wide. “Was . . . no. No, what is this death? What is this death!”

Huddled forms stirred, and some of the wiser ones scuttled away.

“It’s taking me!” the man screamed, then looked down at the knife in Moash’s hand. “What is that?”

The man trembled for a moment more, then jerked once, going motionless. When Moash pulled the yellow-white knife free, it trailed dark smoke and left a blackened wound. The large sapphire at the pommel took on a subdued glow.
