The atiumAtium economy acts as one of the many ways [[Lord Ruler]] controlled the Final Empire. Lord Rulers control, its scarcity along with its godly Allomantical power make itAtium an extremely valuable currency; a small bead can easily worth a skaa's several years' cost of living. Compared to other precious but practically useless metals, however, it does have one practical use in Allomancy.

The only place Atium can be mined is at the [[Pits of Hathsin]]. A [[noble]] house is in charge of the mining camp at the [[pits of Hathsin]], for example, House [[Venture]] at [[Vin]]'s time. The miners are most serious skaa criminals. To conceal the secret of mining location and process, the skaa sent there are forced to mine to death; not a single prisoner has escaped to tell the story before [[Kelsier]], hence his nickname "the survivor of Hathsin".

A big portion of the [[atiumAtium]] mined at the [[Pits of Hathsin]] is secretly transported by the Canton of Resource. Atium beads are disguised as and hidden in Ministry funds, since metal coins radiates powerful light in the [[Cognitive Realm]], blending beads and coins blinds [[Ruin]] from noticing wherethe flow of the god metal goes.{{book ref|mb3|79}}
