Shallan, awakeningwakes up in a private hospital room, notesfeeling aoddly womanhealthy. rushingA out,woman apparentlysee toher informawake someoneand ofrushes Shallans wakingout. SheShallan has some trouble remembering what happened, so when she sees a guard looking in on her she asks what happened to her. Though he doesn't answer, she suddenly remembers being poisoned, and also [[Kabsal]]. Asking if he is alright, the guard only turns back, but when she tries to get up he glares at her, causing her to stay in bed. She then realizesremembers that she returned the stolen [[Soulcaster]] to [[Jasnah]]. Half an hour later Jasnah comes in. Shallanand wishesdemands to hideknow whenwho see notes the eyes ofordered her formerto Lady. Jasnah proceeds with questioning Shallan on whose orders she stolesteal the Soulcaster. Shallan tells her that hershe fatherstole has died and the situationit of her family,own onlyvolition leavingto outtry thatto save her fatherfamily hadfrom possessed a Soulcasterfinancial himselfruin. Jasnah remarkstells howher stupidthat the planKabsal was and informs Shallan that she has arranged passage for her back to Jah Keved. She then continuestrying to informpoison her thatall Kabsalalong is dead and how he always poisonedwith the bread when he brought some, in order to kill Jasnah. WhenThe Shallanjam protests that she always ate lots ofcontained the bread Jasnah tells her that there was antidote inso theShallan jamwould and how Kabsal used her to get to Jasnahsurvive. Jasnah tells Shallan how disappointed she is in her, and that she now understands that it was the guilt of the theft that drove Shallan to attempt suicide. InformingNo her how she has thrown away a bright future and that no womenone will take her in as a ward now,; Jasnahshe leaveshas thethrown room.away Shallana despairspromising over the loss ofcareer. Jasnah's trustleaves, herleaving family’s safety and even Kabsal, and she finds that no oneShallan caresalone.
