Spoiler Policy Reminder

Under our spoiler policy, any content from books that are not fully released is not allowed on the Coppermind. This includes any information from pre-released sample chapters, readings, and other comments Brandon has made about Stormlight 5. The only exception to this rule is on meta-pages for the books themselves (e.g., Wind and Truth). If you are unsure whether the information you want to add comes from pre-release content, please do not add it and instead ask about it on our Discord.

The origin of the rules is unknown, and the residents of Threnody do not fully understand how they work, even the [[Forescout]]s who were the first residents of the Forests of Hell. Breaking a rule and drawing the attention of shades is not a certain death sentence, but it is very difficult to escape them. Violating each rule provokes a slightly different reaction in the shades. Drawing blood enrages them instantly, while running gets their attention much more slowly. Kindling fire brings immediate attention, but the fire tends to blind and confuse the shades.{{book ref|sfs|2}} Residents of the [[Fortress Town]]s are thought to be more careless with the Rules than homesteaders.{{book ref|sfs|prologue}}

It is possible to violate the Rules inside a ring of [[silver]] without drawing shades, but it is best not to do so even if you believe that you are safe.{{book ref|sfs|5}} Legend held that the [[White Fox]] could break the Simple Rules because shades would not dare come for their soul.{{book ref|sfs|prologue}}
