Spoiler Policy Reminder

Under our spoiler policy, any content from books that are not fully released is not allowed on the Coppermind. This includes any information from pre-released sample chapters, readings, and other comments Brandon has made about Stormlight 5. Like many Rosharan plants, scalespray protects itself from highstorms through withdrawing its fronds into its trunk, which grows in a characteristic shape of overlapping scales. This trunk - which is where the scalespray's name probably comes from - is about the height of an adult human, with a crown of leaves reaching far higher. The particular shape could be used to give it sufficient flexibility to both pull in and withdraw all its delicate parts, as when withdrawn, it's noticeably bulkier. At the very top of its crown, scalespray grows a single cluster of fruit, each the size of a man's fist.Shallan's sketchbook
Appearance and Anatomy
Scalespray is a relatively tall tree, with a trunk about the height of an adult human topped by a crown of fronds reaching far higher. The trunk grows in a characteristic shape of overlapping bark with the appearance of scales, presumably the source of the scalespray's name. At the very top of its crown, scalespray grows a single stalk containing smaller leaves and a large cluster of seeded fruit, each the size of a man's fist.Shallan's sketchbook

Given its depiction in Shallan's sketchbook, it's possible scalesprays are grown either in Jah Keved or the environs of Kharbranth.
Like many Rosharan plants, scalespray is able to protect itself from highstorms. When the tree needs protection, the crown of fronds withdraws into the trunk, with only the tips visible. The trunk itself compacts, becoming shorter and more squat. The scale-like bark gives the tree sufficient flexibility to alter its shape for maximum protection, reducing its overall height by nearly half. The fruit remains exposed when the fronds and trunk are retracted.Shallan's sketchbook

Ecology
Given its inclusion in Shallan's sketchbook alongside stumpweight, snarlbrush, and markel, it is likely that scalespray can be found in Alethkar and Jah Keved, or possibly the environs of Kharbranth.

Uses
When scalespray is in its retracted form, its fruit can be easily harvested by humans. The specific uses of the fruit are unknown.Shallan's sketchbook
