A painrial is a type of fabrial used to decrease and even eliminate the pain felt by someone while allowing them to maintain feeling, or alternatively to create and increase pain to excruciating levels.sa1sa3sa4 Navani's notebook appears to state the primary gemstone is a ruby.

Diminishers
The artifabrian Longshadow designed a painrial that was quite large, about the size of a fist, twok and had a set of claw-like legs which were wrapped around the pained area and locked in place with a clip.twok That particular painrial was powered by a ruby and made of polished brass.twok Navani Kholin later refined its design.twok She hoped to eventually to refine the design to be less bulky. Navani saw it being used by surgeons so they could operate without fear of causing pain to their patients. While it did not heal the wounds, Navani hoped that the painrial was a step in the right direction.

Navani also integrated a painrial device into her vambrace timepieces which she made for herself and Dalinar.sa3sa3 They offered some light pain relief and also could act as a defense mechanism, by releasing shocks into someone rather than taking their pain away. This function seemed to be toggled between using a switch made of gems.sa3vambrace.jpg

Augmenters
Augmenter painrials are most notably utilized by Navani to act as an equalizing force in otherwise hopeless situations. The first such usage was to disable some of Amaram's soldiers, who, possessed by the Thrill, would otherwise have killed her, Kmakl, and Fen.sa3 The next such use was to incapacitate Raboniel to give Navani the second she needed to stab her with a raysium knife.sa4 In both situations, however, they were uncontrollable and affected the user as well as the victim.

Pain knives are a type of painrial that avoid such a drawback by utilizing a conventional weapon as well. Containing three retractable knives that can be set to four different lengths to vary the pain felt, they pierce an attacker's clothing, increasing the pain from the wounds to unimaginable levels. They have a removable cover for easy infusion of Stormlight.Navani1.jpg
