I hate them. But I try to hate everyone. That way, I don't risk leaving out anyone particularly deserving.

— Sebarial to Shallan Davar[1]

Highprince Turinad[2] Sebarial is a highprince of Alethkar on Roshar. His banner, colored gold on black, consists of the sebes and laial glyphs stylized as a skyeel.[1]

Sebarial's princedom lies in southern Alethkar.[3] A large force of civilians, in lieu of soldiers, comprise his warcamp at the Shattered Plains;[1] it is the southernmost, approximately an hour from Dalinar's via carriage.[4]

Appearance and Personality

Sebarial is plump and bearded. He is outwardly a very obnoxious, rude, lazy, and vulgar man and comes across as a fool, though he is actually quite intelligent and very sly. He avoids publicly showing his interest in Alethi politics, but privately he does pay some attention.[5]

Though Sebarial himself is not very religious, his ardents are quite devout.[6] Likewise, though he himself is useless in battle, he sees to it that his soldiers are well trained. Sebarial's genius is that he knows how to hire the right people for a job.[7]

History

Vengeance Pact

You sly eel. While the others fight a war, you’ve been building an economy.

—Shallan to Sebarial[1]

Sebarial accompanied the other Alethi highprinces to the Shattered Plains in pursuit of the Vengeance Pact. However, because he recognized that the battles for the gemhearts meant Alethkar would never completely abandon the warcamps, he preferred to focus on building mills, farms, and other manufactories in lieu of participating in plateau runs; his burgeoning economy supported markets, fully constructed tenements, and even lavis fields to the southwest of the camp. His warcamp, reflecting his prediction of Alethkar's semi-permanent presence there, was built much more like a city than any of the others, with straight streets and buildings designed with rounded roofs, corners, and sides to better repel winds from highstorms.[1][4]

Battle of Narak

Sebarial was one of the three highprinces to accompany Dalinar out onto the Shattered Plains.[8] Though he did not partake in the fighting, he helped organize the army as they moved towards the Oathgate.[9]

Relationships

Palona

Palona is Sebarial's Herdazian mistress. She calls him "Turi." And also sometimes "the idiot."[1] They enjoy witty banter and seem genuinely fond of each other despite their outward griping.

Shallan

Shallan Davar maneuvers Sebarial into hosting her when she arrives on the Shattered Plains, gambling that he would consider taking her in as getting one up on Dalinar and therefore agree. She claims a distant relation to him and begins calling him "Uncle Sebarial," also specifying a large stipend which Palona ensures that they pay.[5]

Warcamp and Economics

Warcamp

Little Herdaz is located within Sebarial's warcamp.[10]

Manor

Shallan describes the manor as modest. Not enormous, the building is of a refined classical design, making use of pillars along the front, and a taller row of buildings in the back as a wind break. The grounds are filled with ornamental shalebark, a flagstone drive, and some trees.

Indoors, the manor contains much marble and crystal. There are statues trimmed with gold and a staircase leading to a balcony on the second floor that overlooks the entrance hall. The east wing of the manor contains white rooms richly furnished, with silk hangings and thick rugs softening the walls and floor. The beds are luxurious, as well.[1]

Quotes

Bah! Woman, you make me the most henpecked man in all of Alethkar, and I'm not even storming married!

— Sebarial to Palona[1]

I've got a feeling about you, Dalinar old man. I think it's wise to stay close to you. Something's going to happen out there on the Plains, and opportunity rises like the dawn.

— Sebarial to Dalinar[8]

Onward, then! To glory and some such nonsense. If we find riches, remember that I get my part! I got here before Aladar. That has to count for something.

— Sebarial to Dalinar, Roion, and Amaram[8]

Trust a coward to know the smartest way to stay out of fighting.

— Sebarial about Roion.[11]
