The Five Scholars were a group of Returned who studied the magic systems of Warbreaker in detail. Their research led to the ability to create Lifeless with only one Breath as well as the formulation of the Ichor-alcohol necessary to ensure their continued and efficient operation.
They were friends and colleagues until Vasher co-created the sword Nightblood and killed one of them with it. The creation of the Lifeless began a war which eventually split Hallandren and Idris into two nations.
