The cutaway vine is a dangerous plant species found on the island Patji on First of the Sun.[1]
The vine grows in the shape of a net in the tops of trees; if disturbed, the net will fall on its prey, anchoring itself with stinging barbs and then taking a few hours to retract. It has a distinctive curl which allows trappers to identify it and avoid it.[1]
Sixth of the Dusk made use of a cutaway vine to hide his canoe after arriving on Patji. Knowing that other trappers would steer clear of the vine, he activated the trap and hid his boat in the underbrush near the tree.[1]
