Vin was born to [[Tevidian Tekiel]]{{ref|b|mb1|c|26}}, lord prelan of the [[Steel Ministry]], and his skaa mistress. She and her (unnamed) sister inherited Allomantic powers from their father (her sister was a [[bronze|Seeker]]{{ref|b|mb3|e|73}}).
Her mother was insane and was driven by Ruin to kill Vin's baby sister with a metal pin that became a Hemalurgic spike, which the mother then pierced the infant Vin's ear with, giving Ruin access to her mind and influence her.
