They may be captured in a [[polestone]] like other spren, but it seems to require both a [[Bondsmith]]{{epigraph ref|sa3|79}} and a perfect gemstone.{{book ref|sa3|121}} A [[Lightweaver]] is also known to have temporarily imprisoned an Unmade.{{book ref|sa3|30}}{{book ref|sa3|32}}

The origin of the Unmade is uncertain, but they are believed to have come into existence before the start of human civilization on Roshar.{{book ref|sa3|77}} They have been implied to have once been something else before being made into the Unmade,{{book ref|sa3|84}}{{book ref|sa3|32}} but for now there is no indication what they once were. They were active in the Desolations, helping aid Odium's troops in the combat with their various skills.{{book ref|sa3|77}} Urithiru was equipped with some sort of protection against the Unmade.{{epigraph ref|sa3|73}} Since Aharietiam, they have remained subtly active on Roshar.{{book ref|sa3|77}}{{epigraph ref|sa3|92}} Ba-Ado-Mishram likely helped the singers fight the [[False Desolation]]{{epigraph ref|sa3|80}} and has not been seen since,{{epigraph ref|sa3|107}} possibly captured by [[Melishi]].{{epigraph ref|sa3|79}} At some point Re-Shephir was also capturedimprisoned by a Lightweaver,{{book althoughref|sa3|30}} but she has sincelater escaped capture.{{book ref|sa3|3032}}
