He is very popular among many darkeyes because he has set up a number of hospitals in the city, funded by the entrance fee to the [[Palanaeum]].{{ref|b|twok|c|7}} In these hospitals everybody is healed without having to pay for it. He even visits his hospitals once a week.{{ref|b|wok|c|48}}
In general he is considered slow-witted or even dull. In truth, Taravangian once went to go visit the [[Nightwatcher]] and received a curse and boon from the [[Old Magic]]. As a result of this his intelligence fluctuates from day to day, sometimes making him idiotic and sometimes a genius. He makes tests for himself the night before, and if he can't achieve a certain score in the morning his guards have orders to keep him away from important decisions for that day.{{ref|17s|2311|post|21215|Brandon said that Taravangian used the Old Magic, and that he wakes up each day with a different IQ.}}
