Dalinar, wishing to see the good in Taravangian, does not immediately execute him, instead keeping him prisoner in a well-furnished home where Taravangian's requests are cared for. During this time, Taravangian's mental state deteriorates, and he spends more days in his cognitively impaired, compassionate state. He is visited by Szeth and Renarin, but is too slow to carry on a conversation, and fails at his plan of manipulating Szeth. Dalinar eventually declares that he will not be executed, and instead sentences him to lifelong imprisonment so that he can prove to Taravangian that humans can defeat Odium.

Szeth, disapproving of Dalinar's decision, enters Taravangian's home and murders him. Upon entering the cognitive realm, in the time between death and entering The Beyond, OdiumTaravangian confrontsis Taravangianconfronted by Odium. Still next to Szeth in the physical realm, Taravangian reaches the cognitive manifestation of Nightblood and uses histhe cognitive manifestationweapon to destroy Rayse, the vessel of Odium, due to Odium being in a weakened state from a conflict between vessel and shard. Taravangian takes up the shard of Odium and Ascends, then converses with Cultivation.

As the vessel of Odium, he confonts Hoid, who is expecting to meet Rayse. Hoid notices that something is amiss, and attempts to play it off so as not to make Taravangian suspicious. He sees through it, however, and wipes Hoid's short-term memory, then replays the same conversation with him, slightly altering his dialogue so as not to set Hoid off.
