Talenel fought the [[Voidbringer]]s in a series of [[Desolation]]s. He typically chose fights believed to be impossible to win and come away victorious, although Taln himself usually lost his life in the process.{{ref|b|twok|prelude}} Due to Talnel's title of Stonesinew, it is likely that his order of [[Radiant]]s was the the [[Stoneward]]s. He is somehow related to the [[Order of Talenelat]], a [[devotary]] whose membership included [[Dalinar Kholin]].{{ref|b|twok|c|54}}
Talenel was the only Herald who died in the [[Desolation|Last Desolation]], he was abandoned by the other Heralds when they chose to walk away rather then return the place of torment that they were trapped in between the [[Desolation]]s.{{ref|b|sa1|prelude}}

At the end of [[The Way of Kings]] he appeared at the gates of [[Kholinar]] dazed and confused. He introduced himself as Talenel'Elin, Stonesinew, Herald of the Almighty. He gave warning of a new Desolation, and promptly collapsed.{{ref|b|sa1|epilogue}}

During [[Aharietiam]], also known as the Last Desolation, Talenel chose to attempt to hold a passage by a northern waterway, a near impossible task.{{ref|b|twok|prelude}} While he was successful, he also was killed. Taln was the only Herald to die in the Last Desolation. All of the other surviving Heralds chose to abandon the [[Oathpact]], leaving only Taln bound to it, in hopes of ending the cycle of Desolations without breaking the Oathpact. Talenel alone returned to [[Damnation]], due to his death he had no choice, but the rest of the Heralds walked free. Unfortunately, the Oathpact was shattered, so their efforts to end the Desolations failed.{{ref|b|twok|c|46}}

Though his blade didn't vanish when he collapsed this is not an evidence that he might have died. It's indisputable that Taln is one of the Heralds and thus it's known from the Prelude that the Herald's Honorblades vanish if their wielder died (in contrary to Shardblades that stay when the Shardbearer dies).{{ref|b|sa1|prelude|"If their masters had died, those Blades would have vanished."}}

Not long after the [[Battle of the Tower]], Talenel returned to Roshar from Damnation. It is uncertain where precisely he returned to, but he quickly rushed to [[Kholinar]], cutting through the city gate with his [[Honorblade]] to give warning to the [[Alethi]] that the [[True Desolation]] was upon them. Oddly, [[Hoid]] knew when and where Taln would arrive, and was waiting in Kholinar for him. After his proclamation, Taln promptly collapsed. However, he did not die. Unlike [[Shardblade]]s, which remain when their holder dies,{{ref|b|twok|c|47}} Honorblades vanish when their owner dies, so as Taln's Blade did not vanish, he was still alive.

Also, Brandon has said Talenel will be a viewpoint character in later books{{ref|17s|637|post|11092|Stormlight Archive Main Characters}}, and this implies that Taln didn't die when he slumped in the Epilogue of The Way of Kings.{{ref|?|697|14|Just because he fell doesn't mean he's dead.}}
