Szeth is given a sword by Nale, which he calls "sword-nimi". This sword, which is also known as [[Nightblood]], talksis to him in his mindsentient and can readcommunicate hiswith Szeth thoughtstelepathically. They have conversations often and Nightblood knows a good deal of information about Szeth's past. whoSzeth tells himNightblood he had aanother voice likespeak to him in thehis pastyouth, and that he hopes this time it goes better{{book ref|sa2sa3|92}}. Szeth will partially draw the sword to see how other people react to it; the sword causes "good" people to feel sudden nausea.{{book ref|sa2.5|15}}
Szeth draws the sword twice. The first time in the Purelake. When he drew the sword, he heard a rushing sound, like thousand screams. Colors changed around him. They deepened, growing darker and more vibrant. It shouted DESTROY!. Liquid darkness flowed from the Blade, and then melted to smoke as it fell. Flesh and blood puffed instantly into black smoke. This sword seemed to sear away even the man's soul. He was able to ram it back into its silvery sheath. {{book ref|sa3|92}} The second time, it almost consumed him and Lift, this happened at the Battle of Thaylan. {{book ref|sa3|118}}
 
Szeth fully draws the sword twice. The first time he draws it is during a [[Skybreaker]] test administered by [[Ki]] at the [[Purelake]]. Szeth uses Nightblood to execute a corrupt nobleman. When he draws the sword, he immediately feels its power, his senses appear to heighten, and he feels incredible pain in his arms as the sword seems to infuse his body with black liquid.{{book ref|sa3|92}} The nobleman disappears completely upon being stabbed and Szeth is able to sheath the sword before it overtakes him. He draws the sword again during the [[Battle of Thaylen Field]] as he tries to help [[Lift]] retrieve the [[King's Drop]], effortlessly vaporizing large swaths of enemy fighters. One of the [[Fused]] is able to take the sword's sheath and block a strike with it, leaving Szeth holding it until it nearly kills both him and Lift.{{book ref|sa3|118}} They are saved when [[Dalinar Kholin]] creates a [[perpendicularity]] that douses the area in Stormlight, satiating Nightblood and allowing Szeth to retrieve the sheath.{{book ref|sa3|119}}
