The ability to Bind Surges is not innate to native Rosharans. People are granted this ability bydepending formingon bondshow withthey sprenact. By acting in harmony with a certain type of sprenhonorable, one can attract anda form[[spren]], athat bondbonds with them. The closer the bondrelative the better able to access Surgebindingperson. It is hypothesized that speaking the Ideals strengthens and reinforces the Spren-bond. {{clarify|it has not been confirmed that this is called the Nahel Bond}} An effect of that bond is that the bonded person has acces to Surges.

It is believed that all the magic systems in the Cosmere are based on the same 16 Powers of Creation, and these reflect the 16 Shards of Adonalsium. Each Surge corresponds to one of the Powers, which means there should actually be 16 Surges total. The currently theorized Surges associated with the Knights Radiant are listed below in order.
 
:External Physical-Pressure, Gravity
:External Mental-Darkness and Light
:External Temporal-Transportation (Timespace Contraction)
:Internal Enhancement-Transformation (Spirituality)
:Internal Mental-Memory, Awareness
:Internal Physical-Perception, Inertia
 
Other Surges such as Regrowth were known, and accessed via fabrial even in the days of the Knights Radiant.

There are ten Surges. Every Surgebinder only has access to two of them. The combination of those two Surges makes him a special type of Surgebinder called an Order. There are ten of these Orders and each of these Orders shares his access to one Surge with the two adjacent Orders respectively.{{clarify|you might add a reference to the 'front-cover-sheet' of TWoK}}
The Knights Radiant were organized in ten Orders along these limitations.

:[[Shallan]] is able to perform Soulcastings and store memories. Likely belongs to Shash
:[[Szeth]] has access to the Three Lashings. Yet he is not going to become a Windrunner. Something different is happening to him.{{ref|?|697|24|Do Szeth and Kaladin both belong to the same order of knights radiant?}} This may mean that Szeth is no Surgebinder.
