The Surges, as well as their names, far predate the Knights Radiant.{{book ref|sa4|i|1}} Surges existed on Ashyn prior to humans' arrival on Roshar, albeit without being restricted by Honor.{{book ref|sa4|111}} Back then the [[Nahel bond]] had not yet been discovered and humans could Surgebind freely.{{book ref|sa4|76}} [[Ishar]] was the first person that Odium tricked into experimenting with Surges. After Ashyn was destroyed by unrestricted Surgebinding and humans fled to Roshar, Honor started to put limits on certainthe Surges, like Adhesion and Cohesion, but with Honor Splintered, at least some of these restrictions are starting to loosen.{{book ref|sa4|111}}
