Veil is gaining a reputation as a "Swiftspren". A spren robbing the rich and giving the food to the poor. She enhances this reputation by sending Ishnah and Vathah, wearing illusions, to look like Veil. After checking in on Grund and Muri, she notices a Cult of Moments procession, creates a Spren illusion shaped like the one she saw on the Winds Pleasure, but gets caught up in the pleasure and nearly loses herself to the Unmade's "darkness". She breaks free and, under the illusion of a Spren, disperses the parade. Shaken, she realizes she wants to be a hero too much and it stops her from being logical like Jasnah.

Shallan finds her personalities conflicting: Brightness Radiant and Veil. She finds ElkoharElhokar in a tavern who also suffers from an identity crisis: wanting to be a hero. Shallan sketches an image of what ElkoharElhokar could be, noble and regal, which nearly brings him to tears. As she goes upstairs, Ishnah hands her a note securing her access to a feast at the palace.
