;Plot Summary
Rock (real name is Lunamor) is cooking stew and surprised at how he finds the barren Shattered Plains beautiful. Kaladin is training crews on how to use Stormlight and instructs Lopen, Sigzil, and Peet to start teaching. (Teft never came back the night prior). Kaladin instructs them to say the first oath and Rock quietly recites it to himself as he cooks. ("Life before death. Strength before weakness. Journey before destination.") Kaladin comes over to one of Rock's assistant cooks, Hobber (who lost his legs to the white assassin Szeth) and encourages him to learn to breathe in light. Kaladin wants his men to learn how to heal themselves so he doesn't have to worry about them being injured.
Elohkar appears and asks Kaladin to come with him to Kholinar and reclaim their home. Kaladin agrees and they will have 20 days to prepare the rest of the men. Renarin meanwhile comes straight from his daily duty at the Oathgate to be with Bridge 4. Rock invites him over to help cook and notes he could see all spren, but never Renarin's. Renarin is conflicted over what is expected of him, to be a warrior, and what he is good at, scholarly work. He is worried about being too different and not being Bridge 4 but Rock dissuades him of this and encourages him to pursue what he is good at.
Next Rock talks to Skar who is struggling at drawing in Stormlight. And while teaching him Lunamor actually draws in Stormlight himself. Skar, instead of being jealous, is happy that Lunamor did this when he did not. He is a teacher at heart.
Rock then sees a large group of powerful windspren show up to watch Bridge 4 practicing. Sylphrenna says they wouldn't talk to her because she sought out kaladin and hate to admit they were wrong. Rock offers them Stormlight infused spheres which the most important one takes before flying away. (the other spren remain to watch) Hobber starts to breathe in stormlight and captures the attention of the Spren and Bridge 4 (who give all their gems to him to continue healing). At the end, his legs are healed and Kaladin is hopeful for what this means in protecting Bridge 4 in battle.
Kaladin flys to investigae a plume of smoke in the West while Rock and Bridge 4 grab a bridge and start marching. With Stormlight the task is quite easy. Once they reach a smoking wagon they see a Voidbringer flying away. Rock searches through the dozens of dead to find his family safe in a wagon. He introduces his family and his wife lets him know something is terribly wrong back at their home. The men of Bridge 4 carry the bridge to take Rock's family home for the last time. No longer slaves, they will now fly with Stormlight.
