It is possible for Vessels to be separated from their Shards without dying or Splintering the Shards they held.120658714278 If this happens, then after the Vessel's death, it is able to resist the pull into the Beyond.6

History
Following the Shattering, the power that comprised Adonalsium broke into sixteen pieces, each polarized to one particular aspect of it, such as Ruin or Endowment. Those pieces, each equal in power,13482 became known as the Shards. The sixteen killers of Adonalsium each took up one of the Shards, Ascending and becoming the first Vessels.3 Following their Ascension, each of the Vessels departed Yolen. Some settled on various planets, henceforth dubbed Shardworlds; others set no roots.4441 At this time they all had an equal amount of power.13482

Over the millennia, several Shards have passed away, one way or another. The most common cause of death for them were actions of one specific Shard, Odium, who went on a killing spree, splintering Ambition, Devotion, Dominion and Honor before eventually being trapped in the Rosharan system by the remnants of the latter.Rosharan The death of Preservation's Vessel, Leras, led to the power being passed between several hands before it was eventually combined with Ruin to form Harmony.mb36 By contrast, Autonomy spread, creating avatars to inhabit numerous Shardworlds, including Obrodai and First of the Sun.11432

There remain sixtwo Shards that have not been named, nor referred to explicitly in text. Very little is known about them.

One of these two Shards has an intent similar to Wisdom or Prudence.1268413231 Hoid and this Shard seem to be antagonistic towards each other,sa313239 though this appears to be a common thread in his relations with the original Vessels.sa1sa3sa2 There is a Shard that "just wants to hide and survive,"2788 though it has realized over time that that may not be the most desirable course of action; it is implied that this may be the "wisdom" Shard.1268413231
There exists a Shard that wishes only to hide and survive.2788 It's possible that this refers to "wisdom". There's also at least one unknown Shard that doesn't inhabit any planet.4441 Moreover, at least one unknown Shard has been mentioned as having been splintered, although this may refer to Ambition, who was unnamed at the time this information appeared.1357

At one point, there was an unknown Shard that does not inhabit a planet.4441 Since then, however, the Shards Ambition, Invention, Mercy, Valor, and Whimsy have been revealed; it is unclear if any of them are this Shard. Similarly, at one point there was at least one unknown Shard that had been Splintered by Odium,1357 though the Splintered Shard Ambition has been revealed since then.
What is known is that there exists a Shard with intent similar to Wisdom, that once sought to hide and survive, but has over time realized that this isn't the most desirable course of action.1268413231 Hoid and this Shard seem to be antagonistic towards each other, though this appears to be a common thread in his relations with all Vessels.sa313239

In addition to these unknown Shards, Harmony believes there are Shards that are hidden to him that are encroaching on Scadrial.sa4 This likely refers to the entity Trell, which is associated with one of the nine Shards that were known when trellium first appeared,62618554 likely Autonomy.Trell (Trellism)#Theories & Speculation
When asked about what Vessel he would become, Brandon suggested Ingenuity, implying that it might be another Shard.102883299 Likewise, Prudence was suggested to be a very Shardic name.13231 However, neither Ingenuity nor Prudence have been confirmed as Shards.

Invention has been confirmed as a Shard in 'Full of Awe' (Chapter 24 of Rhythm of War) by Sazed in a letter to Hoid

Powers and Abilities
Shards can use their power to create complex constructs, capable of continuing their function past the Shard's death. Examples of such constructs are the snapping mists of Preservation,4445 and the vision journal of Honor.sa1 Shards can also create sapient beings from their power -- this is most commonly seen on Roshar, with its overabundance of spren. Many of them, like the Stormfather, Nightwatcher, and honorspren were created by local Shards.sa3sa3

Shards can also create avatars, personas that can act independently of them.13220 Avatars can be of any gender, race, and species, regardless of the original Vessel creating them, and can be formed at a considerable distance from the main body of the Shard, with many different avatars able to exist on a single Shardworld.397493853974 Though a Shard can create them directly, avatars can also form without a conscious decision on the Shard's part, though the Shard is still aware of what is happening.13220 When created directly, however, they can be instilled with specific traits.sa3 Some avatars are self-aware, while others are not, although the parent Shard will always be aware. Though some would call these avatars Splinters, it is not clear whether they truly fit the definition.1332313339

Avatars are, in a way, considered to be Shards in their own right.8606 Known ones include Patji and the Sand Lord, both of Autonomy.89025876 It is difficult but possible for someone to become a Vessel of an avatar.13323

Champion
TheHonor onlyencouraged knownDalinar instanceKholin ofto thistry isto whenget Odium namesto Dalinaragree Kholinto a contest of champions;sa1 Odium eventually agreed and attempted to name Dalinar as his champion, though Dalinar declined.sa3 haveThe beenHeralds previousare instancessimilar to champions9548 and Shards outside of the Rosharan system have also had champions.5286
