Nightblood is sentient but lacks a human context for its intelligence (sapience). Time has no meaning for it, nor can it understand the dynamic aspect of human personalities. The first hours of its life are imprinted into its memory, and it cannot overwrite the initial experiences, such as Denth being fond of it and Shashara being alive. It is, however, very capable in some ways, able to grow and learn.7395 Vasher tends to underestimate its capacity to change.7373
It can speak into the minds of people nearby, including Vasher, Vivenna, Lift, and Szeth

|You don't need those other swords, a perky voice said in Dalinar's mind. I am as good as ten swords. Did you see how great I was? "I saw," Dalinar said to the sword. "You... chipped a Shardblade. An Honorblade." I did? Wow. I am a great sword. We destroyed a lot of evil, right? "You promised not to speak into the minds of others, sword-nimi," Szeth said softly. "Do you not remember?" I remember. I just forgot.

As an Awakened object, Nightblood's goal is to fulfill its Command, "Destroy evil".wb It often tries to convince its wielders that they should draw it and is often bored or frustrated when sheathed.wbsa3 Though it thinks otherwise, Nightblood doesn't need to sleep.3021
