There exists a set of tones complementary to the pure tones of Roshar, identical in frequency, but created and infused with Intent. These tones, sometimes called "opposite tones" behave similarly to the pure ones, in that they too interact with their matching Light (e.g. Stormlight will interact with Honor's opposite tone), but where the sound produced by the pure tones attract Light, their opposites ''repel'' it. Intent plays a critical role in the creation of these opposite tones, as they cannot be created onby accident, one must ''Intend'' to produce them, though there exists a caveat: an opposite tone can be produced mechanically, with a musical instrument and with no Intent, as long as the instrument was created with the Intent of producing an opposite tone in the first place.{{book ref|sa4|97}}
