Kaladin spends eight months under various slavemasters, until he is eventually sold to [[Highprince]] [[Torol Sadeas|Sadeas]] to work as a [[bridgeman]] in the [[Shattered Plains]]. During this time, he meets [[Syl]] and begins exploring his powers as a [[Knight Radiant]]. He becomes the leader of [[Bridge Four]], which he trains as spearmen in secret. During the [[Battle of the Tower]], Bridge Four saves the lives of Highprince [[Dalinar Kholin]] and a sizable part of his army. In gratitude, Kholin secures their freedom, makes Bridge Four into his personal guard, and grants Kaladin command of all the [[bridge crew]]s, with Kaladin appointed to the rank of captain—a first for a [[darkeyes]]. As a captainsoldier in Kholin's army, he trains the [[bridgemen]] into a full-strength fighting force while protecting the Kholin family—saving Dalinar from the [[Szeth-son-son-Vallano|Assassin in White]] and King [[Elhokar Kholin|Elhokar]] from [[Graves|other assassins]]. During the [[Battle of Narak]] he definitively defeats the Assassin in White and publicly acknowledges his status as a member of the [[Knights Radiant]]. When [[Urithiru]] is discovered, he becomes one of the four founding members of the post-[[Recreance]]-era Knights Radiant.
