While running towards his younger brotherKaladin, he killedkilling a man for the first time, althoughduring hehis didn'trun, getreaches muchTien chanceonly toafter reflecthe on it in the battle chaos. The enemy soldiers took Varth's bait andis killed the three boy, while Kaladin could do nothing but watch. Prior to the battle, Kaladin metmeets with another squadleader namedSquadleader [[Gare]] and two of his sergeants. AsKaladin hebribes usuallyGare didto whentransfer he saw[[Cenn]], a young recruitand ininexperienced needsoldier, of protection,to Kaladin's bribedown Garesquad, sowhom thehe otherentrusts squadleaderto wouldhis sendsergeant [[CennDallet]] to Kaladin's own squad. He went by the surgeon's station to also bribebribes the surgeons there to seegive priority to Kaladin'shis men. first,While althoughbribing the surgeons, the pouch stucksticks to his hand by what Kaladin thoughtassumes wasis a [[windspren]], thenalthough heit continuedis onactually his[[Sylphrena]]. wayKaladin goes to the front rankslines ofand the battle line to take his place with his squadprepares for the upcoming battle. Heafter startedconsulting telling his sergeant, [[Dallet]], to take care of Cenn once he arrived but cut off when he saw that the younger boy had already made his way there.{{book ref|sa1|47}} Dallet and Kaladin surveyed the battlefield and decided they would fight around a nearby hill. With a final counsel to Dallet to keep an eye out on Cenn, he took his place at the front of his squad after shortly conferring with another squadleader.
 
Once the signal to march was given, Kaladin's squad ran ahead of the rest of Amaram's army, avoiding the volleys of arrows the enemy sent their way. They engaged the first enemywell-disciplined squad, anduses theirnon-standard discipline forced the enemytactics to retreat, without Kaladin's squadavoid taking any casualties. For the better part of an hour, they held the small hill they'd chosen as their battlefield, only engaging squads that got close to their position. The larger battle, however, didndoesn't go nearly go as well, and after the larger body of Amaram's force brokebreaks, Kaladin's squad retreatedis eastward,left towardsin a largerthe groupmiddle of soldiers that were still holding. Before they were halfway across the field however, a large group of enemy soldiers intercepted them. The two sides met in a crash, and inDuring the chaos, CennKaladin gotsingle-handedly toodefeats closesix to enemy soldiers.
