Kaladin was born in late 1153 to Lirin and [[Hesina]], a family of second [[nahn]], in the town of [[Hearthstone]] in [[Torol Sadeas]]' [[Sadeas princedom|princedom]] in northwestern Alethkar. At Laral's prompting, Kaladin pointedcontradicts outhim, thatwhich thereleads wereto nothe Shardbearers in that conflict. Embarrassed,boy [[Jost]] challengedchallenging Kaladin to a quarterstaff fight,. and Kaladin acceptedAlthough it, neitheris willinghis tofirst backtime downholding ina front of Laral. Although initially overwhelmedweapon, Kaladin gained the upper hand when his natural talent for combat manifestedmanifests. itselfHowever, forseeing thethat firsthe time,has buthurt stopped himself becauseJost, he didstops nothimself wantfrom tofighting hurt the other boyanymore. Jost, having no similar inhibition, beatbeats Kaladin to the ground. Kaladin askedasks Jost to teach him, but the older boy declineddeclines, telling Kaladin to "be what he is." Joined by Tien, Kaladin mademakes his way home while contemplating what he wantedwants to be. AtArriving home, Lirin toldinforms Kaladinhim that Citylord [[Wistiow]] hadhas died and unveiledhas bequeathed a goblet full of [[spheres]]; a bequest from Wistiow on his deathbed to Kaladin so that he could study in Kharbranth.{{book ref|sa1|16}}

Two months later, a thirteen-year-old Kaladin attemptedattempts to treat a five-year-old girl named [[Miasal]] on his own. The girlMiasal hadhas suffered a compound fracture in her leg, a bleeding head wound, and bleeding due to a severed artery in her lower leg. The conversation turnedturns intoto Kaladin's own future, and he realizedrealizes his parents had encouraged him to spend time with Laral in the hopes that the two would marry. As Kaladin mulledmulls over the conversation, Lirin arrivedarrives with the news that the new citylord hadhas arrived. The family mademakes their way to the town square, and metmeeting up with Tien there. Brightlord [[Roshone]] arrivedarrives in his carriage and barely acknowledgedacknowledges the crowd waiting in the town square. When Lirin triedtries to welcome him to town, he respondedresponds by sayingblaming harshlyLirin itfor wasbeing Lirin'sthe faultreason he ended up in that townHearthstone. Citylord Roshone's arrival broughtbrings misfortune to Kaladin's family. Believing that Lirin had stolen the spheres from Wistiow, he influencedcoerces the townspeople to stop making donations for Lirin's work, which wasis the primary source of the family's income.{{book ref|sa1|31}} While the townsfolk followed Roshone's suggestionacquiesce, they still gavesecretly foodprovide provisions to Lirin and Hesina when there was no one to see.{{book ref|sa1|37}} Tien wasis apprenticed to a carpenter because he wasis unsuitable toas hisa father's professionsurgeon while Kaladin wasis still indeterminedunsure whetherif he wantedwants to join the army or become a surgeon. About a year after Roshone's arrival, a group of men triedtry to break into Lirin's surgery room, while, inside, he and Kaladin were lamenting about Roshoneinside. Lirin confronted the men, whoThey demandeddemand that Lirin hand over Wistiow's spheres. LirinInstead, unfazed,Lirin uncovereduncovers the [[Stormlight|light]] of the spheres, exposingrevealing that the intruders to bewere not highwaymenhighway likeas Kaladin had thought, but members of the town;: [[Luten]], [[Horl]], and [[Balsas]], and dared them to take the spheres. Not expecting to find anyone inside, the men leftleave without taking the spheres when confrontedanything.{{book ref|sa1|31}}

Half a year later, Roshone invitedinvites Lirin to the mansion for dinner. Although Lirin and Hesina triedtry to hide the meeting from Kaladin, he foundfinds out and attendedattends the meeting with Lirinanyway. At the mansion, Roshone treateddiscusses thetheir twosituation withand contempt.wants When Roshone offered a bargainthem to sharereturn the spheres; nine-to-one,when Kaladin spokeresponds outwith inan indignationoutburst, and Lirin dismissedsends him away to the kitchens. In the kitchens, Roshone's son [[Rillir Roshone|Rillir]] walkedwalks in with Laral and, orderedconfusing Kaladin for a servant, orders him to fetch them supper. When Kaladin, protestedprotesting that he was notisn't a servant, Rillirloses continuedan toargument humiliatewith himRillir withand hisis wordshumiliated. As Lirin and Kaladin leftleave the mansion, Kaladin admittedadmits to his father that he had been considering joining the army; but hehas said he had decidedresolved to become a surgeon insteadso sothat he would have the education to stand up to the lighteyes. During the conversation, Kaladin realizedrealizes Lirin had indeed stolen the spheres from Wistiow. Kaladin resolvedresolves to use the spheres for his training, but stated he would pay them back to Laral one day. OnWhile on a hunting trip, Roshone and his son wereRillir inflictedare seriousseriously injuriesinjured by a [[whitespine]] and brought to Lirin's surgery room. They anesthetizedanesthetize both the fatherpatients and thebegin son.surgery When Lirin was inspectingon Roshone's. wounds, heLirin hesitatedhesitates when he discovereddiscovers a piece of the whitespine's tusk near Roshone's femoral artery. Kaladin consideredconsiders how easy it would be to fake an accident, but they continued on to save Roshone's life, as Rillir died. There, Kaladin and his family discoveredlearn that Laral wasis now engaged to Roshone himself after Rillir's death. OnlyMeanwhile, since only six men have volunteered to join the army, below the army's quota, so Amaram askedasks Roshone to announce the list of conscripts. LirinAs andcitylord, KaladinRoshone werewas exemptbarred from conscription,placing becauseLirin underor [[Vorin]]Kaladin law,on professionsthe whoconscription servedlist vitalbecause functionsthey inserved townsa werevital protectedfunction fromto itthe town. However, TienRoshone wasplaced notTien's undername the protection ofon the same lawlist; Roshone exacted revenge on Lirin by forcing his younger son into military.when Kaladin tried to take Tien's place, buthe was denied because the law gave the choice to Roshone alone.
