Kaladin (<small>Alethi pronounciation:</small> [[Wikipedia:Help:IPA|[ˈkæl·ə·dɪn]]] <small>KAL</small>-a-din), nicknamed Kal, renowned as Kaladin Stormblessed, is an Alethi Knight Radiant from the Order of Windrunners. Although his father trains him as a surgeon from an early age, he joins Meridas Amaram's army as a spearman at the age of fifteen. Rising to the rank of squadleader, he gains renown as an exceptionally excellent spearman, tactician, and leader. While in Amaram's army, he fights and kills an enemy Shardbearer who was attacking Amaram. This feat entitles him to claim the fallen assassin's Shards. However, he is betrayed by Amaram who takes the Shards for himself, kills Kaladin's men who were witnesses, and sells Kaladin into slavery,

As a slave, Kaladin meets the honorspren Syl and begins discovering his powers as a Knight Radiant. Kaladin spends eight months under various slavemasters, until he is eventually sold to Highprince Sadeas to work as a bridgeman in the Shattered Plains. He becomes the leader of Bridge Four, which he secretly trains as spearmen. During the Battle of the Tower, Bridge Four saves the lives of Highprince Dalinar Kholin and a sizable part of his army. In gratitude, Dalinar secures their freedom, makes Bridge Four into his personal guard, and grants Kaladin command of all the bridge crews. Kaladin then begins training the bridgemen into a full-strength fighting force while protecting the Kholin family—saving Dalinar from the Assassin in White and King Elhokar from other assassins. During the Battle of Narak he definitively defeats the Assassin in White and publicly acknowledges his status as a member of the Knights Radiant, which leads to the re-founding of the Knights Radiant.
