It may be said that the character Hoid could be inspired from Narad muni, a wise sage in Hindu mythology who is terribly skilled in arguments, bold and fearless to a fault and at the same time mischievous, often becoming a hindrance in God's own plans. Travelling over many places, he sings songs, and recites tales long forgotten whilst carrying a stringed musical instrument tanpura, similar to Hoid's Enthir.
