In {{Rosharan date|1169}}, when Gor was barely out of his teens, [[Amaram]]'s army was fighting against Brightlord [[Hallaw]]'s army. Gor spoke with the squadleader [[Varth]], repeating to him Brightlord [[Sheler]]'s command to hold position where they were. Varth realized that he didn't have enough fighting men, so he told the nearby messenger boys to arm themselves and instructed Gor to place them at the front of the squad's formation. Gor briefly questioned this order, but ultimately complied.{{book ref|sa1|6747}}{{book ref|sa4|108}} This sequence of events led to [[Tien]]'s death, and for a time [[Kaladin]] was fueled by his desire for vengeance on Varth and all of his soldiers.{{book ref|sa1|49}}
