Deathspren

Template:SprenInfobox Deathspren are a possible type of spren from Roshar that appear around the dying. They are invisible to the healthy and apear black and fist-sized, with many legs and glowing red eyes to the dying. Dying hallucinations may be attributed to seeing deathspren.

They are widely considered a superstition, and it is unknown whether deathspren are attracted to death or are a proximal cause of death. Lirin teaches Kaladin that deathspren hate water, and therefore a surgeon should always wash his hands before working with a patient. Many Alethi believe that deathspren cannot be seen, except by the dying. When Kaladin is suffering from massive injuries and fever, he either sees or hallucinates deathspren. Sylphrena scares the encroaching deathspren away.
