Connection is thought to be part of the spiritual aspect of a being, and has an influence on who can or cannot ascend as the holder of a certain shard[[Shard]].{{msh ref |6 |4}} Additionally, it is possible to alter connection through artificial means other than Feruchemy{{msh ref |5 |2}} (such as the device designed by the [[Ire]]), though the particulars of how this is accomplished are unknown. Connection can allow communication between two parties that would otherwise be difficult or impossible. Examples include people speaking a different language{{book ref|mb6|22}}{{book ref|sa3|65}} or existing in different realms.{{msh ref|6|6}}.

Connection to a [[shardShard]] is required to ascend. Improper connection decreases the [[vessel]]'s ability to control the powers and weakens the vessel's power.{{msh ref|6|4}} Connection to the paired opposite of a shard makes it difficult to maintain ascension.
