Adien was taken by the [[Shaod]] five years before the events of the book. Instead of sending him to [[Elantris]], his family hid his affliction with makeup. Adien instinctively knows the distance from one place to another, measuring them with the length of his stride. Throughout his life, people believed him simple in the head due to his constant sleeping and mumbling about distances ~~and sleeping~~.
