Mankind fears the [[Desolation]]s, though the [[Last Desolation]] happened 4,500 years ago and very little knowledge about these events has survived. It is known that the Heralds are sent during every desolation to aid mankind in their survival. During the aftermath of the last desolation the heraldsHeralds abandon their blades and break the '[[oathpact']]. The prelude to the Stormlight archive indicates that they abandoned the oathpact partly because they are tired of returning to what is described to be a place of torture and pain, and partly in the hope that if they don't fight it might stop the cycle of desolations and the wasting of lives.
