Sand mastery must be taught and does not appear spontaneously. It can take weeks to decide if a person has the ability or not. The ability must be nurtured and encouraged properly in order to appear.{{book ref|ws1|5}} To test if someone has the ability, sand is placed in a person's hands so they can feel its grains.
